Phytochemicals

Phytochemicals are chemical compounds that occur naturally in plants. Phytochemicals evolved in plants to protect them from various environmental insults (things like radiation and plant-eating parasites). These phytochemical "plant-protectors" do the same thing in your body that they do for plants. They turn you into a biological fortress.

What makes them so special? Phytochemicals have 1) potent anti-inflammatory power 2) potent anti-oxidant power 3) immune-boosting power and 4) potent detoxifying power.1,2

The best way to ensure that you are providing your body with all of the necessary phytochemicals to promote long-term health is to eat the rainbow. There are thousands of phytochemicals in fruits and vegetables that are non-existant in animal foods and processed junk foods, which consitute the majority of the Standard American Diet (SAD).

We can use phytochemicals to turn on the "apoptotic switch” - the wisdom in cells that allows malignant cells to realize that they are not healthy and they must die and recycle themselves (sources of these phytochemicals include: resveratrol, curcumin, EGCg in green tea, carnosol in rosemary).3
